Why Wear Motorcycle Boots?

There are several different reasons to wear motorcycle boots; the top reason being safety and protection.

Protection

Your feet are close to the road, the engine, and, depending on the bike you ride, the rear wheel. There is a lot that could go wrong. All it takes is a simple slip to cause a bad injury. Motorcycle boots have features to protect your feet from specific injuries that could occur on a bike.

Comfort

This type of footwear provides support for riders. They help you handle the vibrations that you encounter while riding, and the cushioning helps maintain comfort when you are shifting or putting pressure on your foot while riding.

Style

Looks are a matter of preference. However, the different motorcycle boots available ensure that you will find something that matches the style you want. The crucial thing is that these boots provide the necessary comfort, protection, and performance that you need without sacrificing the style.

How Should Motorcycle Boots Fit?

Motorcycle boots need to fit correctly, just as any footwear. Luckily, sizing is straightforward. You can start by trying on boots that are the same size as your current shoes.

Sizing may vary slightly from brand to brand, so you may want to try a half-size smaller or larger to see how it feels.

How Tight Should Motorcycle Boots Be?

What should you check? You need to ensure that the boot is not so tight that your foot cannot breathe. As with regular boots, you want to have a small amount of space between the boot and your foot.

However, the boots need to be snug. Your feet help control the bike, and a loose-fitting boot will make shifting and braking challenging and even dangerous.

Remember to try on your boots with the socks that you will use while riding. If you use thinner socks while trying sizes, the size you choose might be too snug if you use thicker socks while on your bike.

Comfort is essential, but be aware that some boots may require a break-in period before they conform to your foot.

Finally, the best strategy is to lace up the boots when trying them on. Some riders with thicker calf muscles may find that everything fits great around their feet, but the boots put too much pressure on their calves when fully laced.

How To Break in Motorcycle Boots

You can break in motorcycle boots by wearing them every day. You can also employ a shoe stretcher at night to mimic your foot. A leather conditioner can also serve to make the leather more pliable.

What Kind Of Boots Should I Wear When Riding a Motorcycle?

There are different types of boots to consider when selecting motorcycle footwear. The differences include both styles and brands. Here are some of the more popular options for motorcycle riding boots, styles, and brands.

The best option for almost every rider is a pair of motorcycle boots that are specifically for riding. The protection and support that they provide make them worth the investment.

Are Cowboy Boots Good For Motorcycle Riding?

Cowboy boots are durable, but they are usually not the best choice for motorcycle riding. They have smooth soles. These are not ideal for a motorcycle, because they can slip off the bike, putting the rider in a dangerous situation. Also, cowboy boots lack the padding to provide comfort and support on longer rides. The leather material, however, can provide some protection.

Are Timberland Boots Good For Riding a Motorcycle?

Timberland boots are not specifically for motorcycles, but they are a quality, durable option. They are leather, they offer traction, and they have some protection with heel and toe guards.

However, Timberlands do not provide the same protection to the top of the foot as motorcycle boots. While they are one of the better options for non-motorcycle boots for riding, they are not as good as motorcycle-specific footwear.

Are Tactical Boots Good For Motorcycle Riding?

Tactical boots offer lots of support and protection. A good pair will seem to last forever. However, like Timberlands, tactical boots don't provide the same support and protection as motorcycle boots.

Motorcycle boots offer more toe, heel, ankle, and top of foot protection. Though tactical boots fall into the "better than nothing" category, you need to make enhancements, such as adding aftermarket toe and heel protection, to make them motorcycle worthy.

Are Red Wing Boots Good For Motorcycles?

Red Wing Boots offer excellent protection and durability. However, they do not protect the ankle or shin support like a dedicated riding boot. The steel toe feature makes them one of the better non-riding boot options for motorcyclists, but they do not provide as much value as riding-specific boots overall.

Review of the Best Motorcycle Boots

Motorcycle boots provide the best protection, comfort, and value to riders. Here are the best options for this type of specialized footwear.

After repeated use, wearers found that the boot stood up to the elements. Also, it retained its good looks with regular cleaning and polishing.

Why it Stands Out to Us

The Durango Harness Boot is versatile. It looks like a regular boot, so you can wear it out and ride to work without having to carry an extra pair of shoes.

These boots have oil and slip-resistant soles, so they will remain on the bike no matter the conditions in which you ride. Furthermore, the 11-inch height offers lower-leg protection.

The boot comes with an insole that offers added cushioning. The Durango is one of those rare motorcycle boots that you can use for both walking and riding.

Why it Stands Out to Us

The best thing about these boots is the way they fasten snuggly onto your foot while still providing plenty of flexibility. The zipper and laces fasten very high, offering plenty of ankle and shin protection.

The rubber sole grips all surfaces. This quality is vital when you are riding a motorcycle because having a foot slip off could cause a loss of control of the entire bike.

Like the Durango Harness Boot, the Smith and Wesson Breach 2.0 is a motorcycle boot that you can also wear in other settings. It is stiff but flexible enough that you can walk with ease.

Bottom Line

The Smith and Wesson Breach 2.0 is a durable boot with a grippy sole. It fastens to your foot easily and quickly, and it offers ample protection without taking away your ability to walk.

The Richa Zenith Waterproof Leather Touring Boots have a sporty, sleek design. Despite being advertised as a boot for value-minded riders, the product has quality components, including the zipper, leather, and motorcycle-centered extras like a reinforced shifting area.

The zipper and velcro may make it easy to fasten this boot, but the velcro may be a turn-off for some riders. The soles are durable but comfortable, and the boot will keep the rider warm in almost any weather conditions.

Motorcycle Boot Types

There are different types of motorcycle boots. Here is an overview of the most common varieties.

Cruiser Motorcycle Boots

Cruiser motorcycle boots offer comfort and some protection. They look more like regular boots than other varieties of motorcycle footwear. Though they often have toe, heel, and ankle stability, they lack the lower leg protection that touring boots have, for example. At the same time, they do provide more protection than non-motorcycle-specific boots.

Motorcycle Boots For Walking

Motorcycle boots are for riding. They are inherently stiff and challenging to walk in because of the padding and protection that they offer. Some types of motorcycle footwear are more flexible. They may not provide shin protection, for example, and they may be more pliable in the heel and toe, making them easier to use for walking.

Leather Motorcycle Boots

Most motorcycle boots are leather, though some also incorporate composite materials to enhance performance. Leather is tough enough to offer protection in most situations. The challenge with leather riding boots is to ensure that they are waterproof, pliable, and broken in so they are comfortable enough to wear.

Adventure Motorcycle Boots

Adventure motorcycle boots have traits that make them ideal for both on-road and off-road riding. They offer shin protection and ankle support. However, they are not as stiff as boots specifically for track or dirt riding. They have a comfort level that makes it possible to wear them for a long time without stiffness or overheating.

Comparison Overview

Here is how motorcycle boots compare to other types of boots.

Motorcycle Boots vs Work Boots

You might feel tempted to save some money on a good pair of motorcycle boots and just let your work boots stand in for them.

While work boots protect the feet, they cannot handle the situations you might find yourself in after a motorcycle crash.

Motorcycle boots protect your feet while riding. They come with low heels, reinforced soles and toes, high-quality leather, fast lacing, and many other traits. All of these design features come together to protect your feet from injury in an accident. Work boots are for another environment and, therefore, lack many of these essential features.

FORMA Adventure Boots

Motorcycle Boots vs Regular Boots

For most people, a boot is a boot, and it can be hard to see what a motorcycle boot offers that a regular boot cannot. Again, as mentioned above, motorcycle boots are for a specific job.

There are boots for all sorts of things: hiking boots, work boots, cowboy boots, and even military tactical boots. Each of these has a specific purpose. Motorcycle boots come with features that enable them to work effectively when riding.

They don’t have laces that will get caught in moving parts. They have low heels, so mounting and dismounting the bike is safer. Their soles are oil resistant and have high traction.

All of these are features that you will have a hard time finding in regular boots.

Motorcycle Boots Long vs Short

There are advantages, as well as disadvantages, to each. Short boots will reach up to the ankle like a high-top-style sneaker.

They are CE approved and have a flexible sole, so you can wear them on and off the bike. They are perfect for commuting but not for long-distance touring.

Long boots will give extra protection up to the shin, with hardened areas that protect the lower leg. They also often have a waterproof lining that prevents your feet from getting wet.

They offer better protection than short boots since they also protect the shin. However, they are a lot harder to walk around in than short boots.

Motorcycle Riding Shoes vs Boots

Motorcycle shoes are a bit of a compromise. While motorcycle boots do the job of protecting your feet from the elements and injuries during accidents, they are quite conspicuous. They can also feel clumsy to walk in when off the motorcycle.

Users often need to have an extra pair of shoes at the office when they commute on the bike, to avoid having to walk in heavy boots all day.

That’s where casual motorcycle shoes come in. They are more comfortable to walk in, look like regular sneakers, and are lighter. They also have protective features for your feet, including ankle cups, thick soles, and reinforced toes and heels.

Some of them even come with waterproof liners and a shifter pad. That said, they don’t offer nearly as much protection as motorcycle boots.

For starters, they don’t protect your shins since they are not long. They also don’t protect you from the twisting forces you might experience during a crash. These shoes are best for commuting to work. However, when touring, racing, or going off-road, you’re best off with proper motorcycle boots.

How To Wash Motorcycle Boots

Motorcycle boots are high-quality leather or Gore-Tex. These materials are not only waterproof, but they are also incredibly durable and able to go through the harshest conditions for many years. That said, they do need a bit of maintenance.

If you don’t clean and polish your motorcycle boots, the wear and tear will be visible as it gradually builds up, and the shoes will lose much of their sheen. To keep them looking spick and span, you need to take the steps below regularly:

  1. Regularly clean off the mud or any dirt that may have lodged into the boot, especially after a long trip.

  2. Wash the boot with plain water to clean off dirt. Tough dirt and mud may need scrubbing to get dislodged. Once done scrubbing, wipe the boot down with a plain cloth.

  3. Now apply some shoe cream on the boot, making sure to cover the entire surface area. Use the appropriate shoe cream for the boot, especially if it’s leather. Black boots require black shoe cream, for example.

  4. Let the boot sit so the cream can dry.

  5. Once the cream has dried, brush all over the boot with a horsehair shoe brush to spread the cream. Be thorough about it to make sure every square inch is covered.

  6. Now wipe down the boot with a shoe shining cloth for that extra sheen.

Be sure to refer to the video below for a full overview of the steps described above:

Conclusion

Motorcycle boots provide vital protection to riders. Different options fit in different situations. Your goal should always be to find a motorcycle boot that offers the highest level of protection while still fitting your other needs.

Motorcycle boots are an essential piece of safety equipment, but they are easier to overlook than a helmet or jacket. Because of the protection that they can provide, they are always a worthwhile investment.

People Also Ask

Do you still feel like you have more questions about motorcycle boots that need answering? Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about motorcycle boots.

How Do You Waterproof Leather Motorcycle Boots?

To waterproof leather motorcycle boots, start by sealing the boots using a silicone seam sealer. Add some leather oil to condition the leather. This step will hydrate the leather and make it supple while filling the pores.

Give the oil a few days to dry thoroughly. Once the boots are dry, apply leather grease or any other waterproofing treatment to the boot. Use a natural product for the best results.

What Are Mesh Motorcycle Boots?

Mesh motorcycle boots have parts made out of breathable mesh fabrics with perforated panels. These increase comfort during riding by preventing the overheating of the foot while still offering full protection.

How To Wear Motorcycle Boots

Boots can differ, depending on the type and nature of the specific one you’re trying to wear. However, the common thing among them is that they need to get broken-in first for comfortable wearing.

The first step with any boot, however, is to pick the right size. After that, breaking-in involves applying a leather conditioner to the boot, then letting it dry. Once dry, flex the leather, pulling it in every direction. Make sure to bend the heels and toe as much as you can. After that, wear the boot as often as you can.

How To Wear Riding Boots To Work

Motorcycle boots can be a bit difficult to blend into work attire. However, it is possible. As long as your work environment isn’t very conservative, it’s easy to work your motorcycle boots into your outfit.

Try to keep the look balanced. The more rugged the boots look, the less fussy the rest of the clothing should be. Motorcycle shoes may be a better option in some office environments.

Are There Motorcycle Boots That Look Like Shoes?

Yes. These are known as casual motorcycle boots. They look more relaxed, they are lighter, and they are more comfortable to walk in. However, they provide many of the protections that standard-looking motorcycle boots do.

How Tall Should Motorcycle Boots Be?

The ideal minimum height should be at least 5 inches. This height ensures enough support is given to your ankles to protect them from the powerful forces they might experience during an accident. Taller motorcycle boots go up to the shin to provide protection there as well.

Why Are Motorcycle Touring Boots Tall?

Motorcycle touring boots are tall to provide ample protection to your legs up to the shin.

Touring involves riding your bike over long distances, which exposes your feet and legs to more elements and increases the chances of an accident occurring. Long touring boots provide your feet and legs with ample protection for these situations.

What Not To Do With Motorcycle Boots?

For starters, please don’t leave them at home when riding your bike. These boots protect you when riding, so don’t ignore them, even on short trips.

You also shouldn’t neglect them as this causes them to lose their shine and wear out faster. Good care and maintenance not only increase longevity but also ensures your boots look as good as the first day you wore them.

Why Do Motorcycle Boots Have Harnesses?

So-called harness boots have a system of four leather straps held together by two metal rings. These boots are like engineer boots, where the harness helps keep the heel in place and create a firm fit over the entire foot, even in situations where a normal boot might come off.

What Does CE Certified Mean in Motorcycle Boots?

CE certification is a European standard for motorcycle boots and other protective gear. For a motorcycle boot to be CE certified, it needs testing against lateral crushing, penetration by sharp objects, and abrasion.

The label will be in the form of a motorcycle icon, the test designation the boot has passed, and a series of numbers. 1s represent lower protection, while 2s represent higher protection. The more 2s, the higher the protection offered.
